Once again, after having hosted the DAGA in 1984, Darmstadt warmly welcomes the 38th German Annual Conference on Acoustics (DAGA). Much has changed for the better since 1984: In the immediate vicinity of the Technische Universität Darmstadt a new and modern convention center, the “darmstadtium”, is now available, which was specifically conceived for such events. Darmstadt is now known as the “City of Science”, home to several universities and colleges, three Fraunhofer Institutes, the GSI Helmholtz Center for Heavy Ion Research, the European Space Operations Center (ESOC), as well as many innovative high-tech corporations. Culturally, Darmstadt also has much to offer! It is the historical center of the art nouveau movement (Jugendstil) and takes much pride in its treasures from the past, the Residenzschloss (castle), the State Museum, the State Theater, and the unique architecture of the “Waldspirale” designed by Hundertwasser.

But Darmstadt is also a center of acoustics, where innovative research in electroacoustics by the Technische Universität has produced practical applications worldwide. The term “machine acoustics” was developed and defined in Darmstadt some 40 years ago. Psycho-acoustics is playing an increasingly important role, and questions regarding flow acoustics and vehicle acoustics are currently being researched. Darmstadt and DAGA – a perfect fit! We are pleased to host another interesting acoustics conference, with many new developments and productive discussions in a very pleasant atmosphere.
